Scheduled for mid September 2010 - Ron, Crew & Car will set out to the Alvord Desert to break 100 mph!
While Steens Mountain looms to the west, the shimmering salt flats of the Alvord Desert unfold to the east. The Alvord Desert playa, which can be either wet or dry depending on the time of year, is one of the largest playas in Oregon—six miles wide and 11 miles long.
On December 6, 1976, Kitty O'Neil set the land speed record for women on the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon, averaging 512.710 mph on consecutive timed runs (the car reportedly exceeded 618 mph on one pass, but ran out of hydrogen peroxide fuel before clearing the kilometer-length timing trap). Her record still stands today. She was deaf.
Ron's Quad Squad Crew consisting of his crew chief, four mechanics, two camera men and our documentary director set out with car and trailer in tow to rough it on the desert for a four day odysey...
DAY 1
Crew departs from Vancouver WA at 6:00 am for a non-stop drive of 8 hours to the town of Fields OR.
After a serious rest stop at the Fields Cafe' for a little dinner and one of their 'World Famous' milk shakes we will press on to our main camp on the dry lake bed. This will require 20 more miles on gravel road to reach the lake bed access and our home for the next two days.
At the end of DAY 1 we will have found ourselves beding down in the middle of the Alvord Dessert to cover details of the next days agenda around a camp fire..
Day 2 -
Early rise for the team means scouting and laying out our 1 mile run for Ron Heagy. This will require marking out the run while clearin any debris that may cause any issues during testing of the car. Multiple runs on the car checking for any mechanical issues while documenting the maximum speed of the car before Ron Heagy arrives on Day 3. The end of day 2 will require two team members to head back to the town of Fields OR. to meet with Ron Heagy in his hotel room to give a report on the cars performance and any itinerary changes to Day 3
Day 3-
The Quad Squad Team is up early again to check course, finalize any car set up and prepare for Ron Heagys arrival at 8:00am. Upon Ron's arrival and refreshment for Ron (if needed) we will go over all details regarding the car, the run(s) and safety proceedures. Before getting Ron into the car and out on the Alvord desert at 10:00am. Early run times are critical do to the heat of the dessert.
Ron will make multiple passes on the desert starting with his unofficial current record of 50mph and gradually making faster passes depending Rons comfort level and team recomendations. This proccess will continue until Ron breaks 100mph while taking appropraite breaks through out the day. At the end of Day 3 it is our hope that by Gods grace Ron Heagy realizes his dream of becoming the worlds first fully quadraplegic human to drive a gas powered automobile over 100 mph!!
Day 4 -
Depart from the Alvord Desert 6:00am
